2017 City of Derry International Choir Festival Applications Now Open
Posted on 27 January 2017
Following the outstanding success of the first four festivals, there are even more ambitious plans for 2017. In addition to all of the familiar elements of previous festivals – concerts, workshops, choral and sacred trails, competitions and an international choral symposium – this year will see even greater community participation, a broad array of visiting international choirs and world-renowned guest acts.
School, national and international choirs are invited to take part in a variety of competitions. Our national categories are open to choirs based in Ireland or the United Kingdom, and include equal and mixed voice, youth choir, and popular, jazz & gospel music, among others. There will also be competitions for both primary and post-primary school choirs, in addition to daily workshops led by experienced international vocal experts.
As always, one of the highlights of the festival will be the International Competition, in which selected choirs will compete for the prestigious ‘Oak Tree of Derry’ perpetual trophy and a cash prize of £2,000. The quality and range of international choirs participating in this competition has gone from strength to strength, so early applications are recommended to avoid disappointment.
Non-competitive applications are also welcome from choirs who would prefer to take part in informal pop-up performances in venues throughout the city, practical workshops with guest artists and adjudicators, community concerts and Sunday church services.
