Posted on 27 October 2014
Academic Choir of the University of Primorska, led by Ambrož Čopi, won in the 2nd International Choir Festival in Ireland’s Derry. Čopi explained that they convinced the jury with their choice of program, musicality and vocal-technical readiness, which all led them to winning the first place amongst 8 choirs in the competition. The festival took place from the 22nd to the 26th October.
In Derry, the fourth largest city in Ireland, the choir from Primorska recreated the works of several important names: the renaissance author Andrea Gabrieli, the romantic composer Josef Rheinberger, the young composer from Primorska Andrej Makor and the modern Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis.
Apart from the International Choir Competition the festival also encompassed the National Choir Competition, International Choralism Symposium, workshops and evening concerts, one of them featuring the world renowned vocal cast The Swingle Singers.
Choirs from Estonia, Poland, Wales, Germany, Czech Republic and Ireland were taking part in the International Competition alongside singers from Primorska.
Academic Choir of the University of Primorska is under the patronage of Student Organisation of University of Primorska and belongs to the very best of Slovenian choirs. It’s members regularly attend concerts and competitions at home and abroad, often returning with the highest reward. In 2009 they competed for the Grand prize (grand prix) of Europe in choral singing in Tours, France. This season marks the choir’s 11th year of activity.
